How to read this comparison
Annual heat-pump electricity (kWh) = useful heating demand in million Btu × 1,000,000 ÷ 3,412.142 ÷ seasonal COP. Gas use (Mcf) = useful demand ÷ furnace efficiency ÷ gas heat content. Annual costs multiply energy use by the displayed rates. Positive savings mean lower heat-pump operating cost under your assumptions.
Published gas and electric prices both use annual 2024 EIA state averages. Blank rate overrides use those prices; enter your own tariff to apply the same custom rate to both comparison places. The 1.037 million Btu per Mcf heat content, demand, COP and furnace efficiency are editable examples. Climate, backup heat and actual seasonal performance can change results. This estimates fuel operating cost, excluding equipment, installation, fixed fees and incentives.
