SOURCES & DEFINITIONS

Know what the map counts.

Medal totals come from ModernDive’s Olympedia-derived companion tables (CC BY 4.0). A team podium award counts once. Summer and Winter stay distinct unless selected together. Melbourne and Stockholm combine into one 1956 Summer edition. The 1906 Intercalated Games are excluded. Canceled Games are labeled in the edition index. Historical and special delegations are separate, without transferring medals to successors.

Sport results are derived from revision-pinned Wikipedia podium tables (CC BY-SA 4.0), credited to their article contributors. Only delegation-edition totals that reconcile with the companion medal table are published; differences after medal reallocations remain unavailable. Population comes from the World Bank (CC BY 4.0), using the exact selected year from 1960–2025. Earlier years, 2026, and historical/special delegations have no comparable denominator. Cumulative rates divide cumulative medals by the endpoint year’s resident population.

211,537 athlete-edition records have a delegation code; 97,952 have a reviewed birthplace match. Birthplace coverage is partial, especially in recent Games. Blank delegation records are excluded. Birthplace joins use unique normalized biography names and compatible birth years from Keith Galli’s Olympedia-derived biographies (MIT); uncertain joins are rejected. Unique GeoNames city matches (CC BY 4.0, attribution GeoNames) supply missing birthplace coordinates and host coordinates; ambiguous places remain unlocated. Athlete records are not a medal-count dataset or an official team census.
